The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has claimed that it would break all previous record while enrolling members in the party fold under the on-going national membership drive launched on November 1.

"The BJP is set to create a new record in terms of membership in the party," party national general secretary J P Nadda said here on Thursday evening. Wait till March 31, 2015 (when the membership drive would continue), one would get to know about the number of BJP members, he added.Refusing to reveal the target set for the membership drive, the BJP general secretary said the target was big. The party at present has about 32 million members. "This was the reason (the target being big) that the BJP had to go for online registration," Nadda said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi used the digital media to register himself as the first member of the party while launching the drive in BJP headquarters in New Delhi on November 1.

The online registration would be apart from the conventional method of filling up forms. The party had planned a strategy to cover all sections of the society under the membership drive and enroll maximum members.

Nadda said the applicants would be given only primary membership. The details of the member would be sent at the block level for scrutiny so as to verify the credential of the member and check the entry of criminals and tainted persons in the party fold. "After remaining primary member for two years, the BJP member would be eligible for becoming an active member in the party," he said.
