The party delayed the announcement of the names of its candidates till today, the last day for filing the nominations as it could not take a decision on dropping Krishna from the contest. The high command finally decided this morning and cleared the names of Hariprasad and Gowda.
Krishna, a former Chief Minister of Karnataka is set to retire from the Rajya Sabha on June 25. He had to make way for Gowda as the party decided to drop his name on the grounds of his advancing age. He is 83 years old, the party sources said.

Speaking to reporters after filing nomination, Gowda said, Congress gave chance to a youngster like him “to work for the next 20 years to rebuild the party and take on the Narendra Modi government and bring Congress back to power”.
He, however, said there was no confusion in the party on the issue of Krishna’s re-nomination. “Krishna is the tallest leader and is a role model for people like me. There was no race between me and Krishna,” he said.
Gowda is a member of the AICC team of spokespersons. Gowda, who wanted to contest the Lok Sabha elections, had recently lost the Congress primaries for Bangalore North constituency. C Narayanaswamy had won the primaries and contested Lok Sabha elections on April 17 unsuccessfully.
“I am thankful to the Congress for giving me an opportunity to serve Bangalore, Karnataka and India. Creating opportunities for the youth, making ‘Namma Railu’ (Circular rail for Bangalore) a reality and safety of women are high on my agenda. Through this nomination, I will work hard to serve my people and give back maximum to the state and the city I grew up in and be part of a constructive opposition in Parliament,” Gowda said.
Gowda is a son of former Legislative Assembly Speaker M V Venkatappa. The Congress has enough strength to win at least two seats in the Rajya Sabha elections. Today was the last day to file nominations.
