In a move aimed to propel its cadre into election mode before the civic polls, Chhattisgarh Congress is working on a plan to stage economic blockade in the state.

"The Congress state unit would be meeting on Monday to finalise the agenda and shape of the agitation," party spokesperson said. The intensity of the economic blockade would also be decided in the meeting as the party had clarified its stand on interrupting evacuation of coal and iron ore from the state.

Under the rough plan designed by the party, the Congress workers would stage agitation across the state from November 1 - the foundation day of Chhattisgarh.

The protest would be against the BJP government's decision to restrict paddy procurement to 10 quintal per acre in the current kharif marketing season.

"Chief Minister Raman Singh had committed that the state government would procure entire produce from the farmers at minimum support price but had backtracked and restricted the limit to just 10 quintal per acre," the Congress spokesperson said. The BJP government had dodged the farmers, he added.

The state government had denied the allegation. Chief Minister Raman Singh said since the paddy procured last year had been piled in the godowns in sufficient quantity, there was no need for surplus procurement this year. The state government had spent more than Rs 12,000 crore for purchasing paddy from the farmers in the kharif marketing season 2013-14.

The state goes to the civic body polls in December this year and the Congress party would be pulling all the strings to come back. The party lost the state polls in November that had come as a big setback for the party cadre.
