The ruling Congress party swept the maiden elections to the Itanagar and Pasighat municipal elections, whose results were announced after counting today.
In Itanagar, of the 30 municipal councilor seats, Congress captured 21, including one uncontested, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) won four seats and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) three, leaving one seat each to People's Party of Arunachal (PPA) and Independent.
In Pasighat, of the 12 municipal councilor seats, Congress won seven, including two unopposed, BJP secured two seats while independents got three seats, according to State Election Commission sources.
However, counting for the three-tier panchayat elections were on and the results were tickling in, the sources added.
Many Congress candidates had however won unopposed in the gram, anchal and zilla parishad seats for which the elections were conducted on May 16 last.
Meanwhile, thanking the people of Arunachal Pradesh profusely for reposing their faith in the ruling Congress, Rajya Sabha member and state Congress president Mukut Mithi on behalf of the rank and file of the party assured continued service to the people.
While congratulating the State Election Commission and all official including security personnel for peaceful conduct of municipal and panchayat elections, Chief Minister Nabam Tuki said the landslide victory of the ruling party is testimony to the policies and programmes of the UPA government at the Centre and the state government for all-round development of the state and its people.
