EC books BJP MP Yogi Adityanath for violating poll code

EC pointed out four of his recent comments that could aggravate differences between communities or cause tension

The Election Commission today issued a notice to Bharatiya Janata Party MP Yogi Adityanath for violating the Model Code of Conduct by making comments that could lead to communal disharmony. Adityanath has been asked to furnish his reply by 6 pm on Wednesday.

The Election Commission pointed out four of Adityanath's recent comments which it said could aggravate differences between communities or cause tension. Adityanath, a BJP MP from Gorakhpur, has of late been in news for his controversial remarks. Adityanath heads BJP's poll campaign for the by-polls in Uttar Pradesh. The state will vote for 11 assembly seats and one Lok Sabha constituency on September 13. The counting is scheduled for September 16.

The EC notice said the Model Code of Conduct came into force August 16. It said in its notice that Adityanath has prima facie violated several provisions of the Code.
