Nearly 50 officials and staff members of the information and broadcasting (I&B) ministry were on Monday asked to take casual leave after they turned up late for work.

Minister Prakash Javadekar led a surprise check on Monday morning here. He found 200 of 700 staff not present.

Employees are expected to report by nine. Those coming after 10 were asked to take casual leave.

Secretary Bimal Julka spoke to senior officials on punctuality. Sources said a circular was issued.

Officials were taken by surprise as Javadekar, who has the additional charge of the environment and forests ministry, heads to Paryavaran Bhavan in the morning, five kilometres away. The minister is usually in the I&B ministry only in the afternoon.

Earlier this month, Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu had undertaken a similar surprise check within his ministry offices at Shastri Bhavan.
