Jayalalithaa's bail plea: HC adjourns hearing to Oct 6

Order means the former TN chief minister will have to stay in jail for at least a week

The Karnataka High Court today adjourned J Jayalalithaa's bail plea hearing to October 6, 2014 due to confusion in the appointment of public prosecutor.
 
The order means that the former TN chief minister will have to stay in jail for at least a week. 
 
Appearing for Jayalalithaa, eminent lawyer Ram Jethmalani argued that bail could be granted to Jayalalithaa as her sentence is just for four years.

However, the court, presided by vacation bench judge Ratnakala, adjourned the case when special public prosecutor Bhavani Singh said he had not recieved any formal communication on his appointment as public prosecutor from the Karnataka government. 
 
Jayalalithaa has been lodged in the central jail here since September 27 after a special court sentenced her to four years in prison in the Rs 66.65 crore disproportionate assets case. She was convicted by the court along with three others the case. Jayalalithaa was also fined Rs 100 crore, while the three others were fined Rs 10 crore each. 
 
All of them had moved the Karnataka High Court on Monday seeking bail and suspension of the special court verdict.
 
Meanwhile, the situation is tense at Parappana Agrahara Central Jail, where Jayalalithaa is kept. Hundreds of supporters of the former TN chief minister, from various parts of Tamil Nadu, gathered in front of the jail and demanded immediate release of their leader. The police had a tough time in controlling the mob. 
 
The Tamil film industry has also declared official bandh today in support of Jayalalithaa and demanded her immediate release.
