 "Lieutenant Governor gives nod to SIT probe on 1984-anti Sikh riots")
Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Junj gave a nod to the Aam Aadmi Party-led Delhi government's recommendations for a probe by Special Investigation Team (SIT) on the 1984-anti Sikh riots.
Speaking over the decision senior lawyer of Delhi High Court H.S Phoolka said under the SIT probe, all those cases which were closed or shown untraced would be re-opened, re-investigated and if the need arises fresh FIRs would be registered.
"We have just now received the information that the lieutenant governor of Delhi has agreed to appoint the SIT to inquire into the cases of 1984 riots which were closed by the police. The SIT which was recommended by the Delhi Government, now the Lieutenant Governor has agreed. We are highly grateful to the Honourable Lieutenant Governor and also to the Chief Minister of Delhi, Mr.Kejriwal for taking such step, said Phoolka.
The Delhi Government last week had recommended to Jung to set up a SIT to probe the anti-Sikh riots within a time frame of one year.
Delhi Government's decision to form SIT came against the backdrop of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi admitting that some of the partymen were probably involved in the violence.
"Dr. Manmohan Singh is the Prime Minister of India, why is he not taking any steps against the congressmen regarding 1984, anti-Sikh riots? Rahul Gandhi, after giving that statement hasn't yet given any names about the people from congress involved in riots. Today, even Britain provided information that since 1983, Indira Gandhi was in talks with them that she wanted to attack the durbar sahib. In these circumstances, an enquiry must be done on this matter, said Delhi legislator, Manjinder Singh Sirsa.
Delhi government legislators took to streets marching with torches outside prime minister's residence demanding justice for the victims of the deadly riots.
"This has been proved that many people from the Congress party were involved in this massacre. Then why the central government is still quiet on this matter. Today, with these burning lamps and torches we are doing a walk, a walk for justice to Mr. Manmoham Singh's residence with aim to tell him to be awakening from his sleep. We want to ask justice from him on this matter. When will the victims of 1984 riots get justice? added Sirsa.
