 "Mayawati alleges collapse of law and order machinery in UP")
Upping the ante against ruling Samajwadi Party (SP) in Uttar Pradesh (UP), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) President Mayawati on Tuesday said that the law and order machinery had collapsed and even cops were not safe in the state.
She asserted that people were living in terror, while criminals, mafias, anarchists, anti-social and communal elements were ruling the roost in UP under the Akhilesh Yadav regime.
“The criminals have become so brazen under state patronage that they have now started to kill policemen at will,” she said addressing the media here.
She said the press conference had also been convened to attract the attention of Governor Ram Naik and the central government towards the alleged deteriorating law and order situation in UP.
Mayawati said policemen and government employees had become most vulnerable under the SP regime, even as she recalled that on duty cops were getting killed in recent times. “When cops are not safe in the state then who would protect the common man.”
Without explicitly seeking dismissal of the Akhilesh government, Mayawati made an obvious reference to the imposition of President’s rule by urging the Governor and the Centre to fulfill their statutory obligations in the interests of UP without further delay.

She warned if the Governor and the central government failed to act in time, the people would not forgive the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led central government. Elections are due in UP early next year.
Taking broadside over the merger of Qaumi Ekta Dal (QED) of mafia-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari with SP, which was later annulled, Mayawati termed the episode as mere ‘theatrics’, which would cut no ice with voters.
“If the SP government is indeed serious and sensitive about improving law and order than it should first expel all ministers having criminal backgrounds from the cabinet,” she underlined.
Taking a swipe, she noted if SP ever decided to incarcerate all party leaders with shady antecedents then all the jails in the state would start bursting at the seams.
The BSP president alleged there was tacit pact between SP and BJP to play divisive politics for electoral gains in run up to the 2017 polls. She claimed there was a conspiracy to create a wedge amongst BSP leaders and confuse its cadre through fabricated news items in a section of media.
