Criticising opposition parties for faulting the Trinamool Congress government on law and order, a state minister today regretted that they were making only political statements, overlooking the government's development record.

Parliamentary affairs minister Partha Chatterjee said the opposition parties had earlier mocked the state government when it said that Jangalmahal and the hills were smiling.

Chatterjee also criticised the attitude of the previous Left Front regime and claimed that during the LF rule opposition parties were not allowed to speak.

"You are taking about stifling democracy. It is democracy at work that you are all allowed to speak even when you are in the opposition. During the previous Left Front regime we were not allowed to speak on issues of Singur, Nandigram and Netai," Chatterjee told the state Assembly.

Chatterjee presented before reporters a comparative study on the issues of development and law and order in the state.

"If you go through the Governor's address in 2010 and that in 2014, you can find the difference. Whether in law and order, education or health, we have done better. Let them compare the work done in the last 34 years with that in the 34 months of TMC rule," Chatterjee told reporters.
