Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati said on Monday that her party will support the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) Act Amendment Bill whenever it is tabled in the Rajya Sabha.
Mayawati said, "The bill will be presented first in the Lok Sabha and then it will come to the Rajya Sabha. I have studied deeply about this bill, and I would like to tell that whenever a government comes into power, either at the Centre or the state, their head has the right to elect a secretary."
"There was some controversy regarding the appointment of new secretary. On this, our party has to say that we should not oppose such amendments. So, whenever the bill comes to the Rajya Sabha, we will support it," she added.
The government had on Friday introduced the Bill in the Lok Sabha amidst opposition to replace an ordinance issued on May 28 to change a clause in the TRAI Act which would have prevented Nripendra Mishra from taking charge as Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Principal Secretary.
A 1967 batch Indian Administrative Service officer from Uttar Pradesh cadre, Mishra has served in many departments, including TRAI as its Chairman in 2006.
