Leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party leaders and Congress condemned Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav for his remarks that the Uttar Pradesh Government can't check every crime taking place in the state.

Yadav also said that the least number of rapes takes place in Uttar Pradesh, which has a huge population of 21 crore people.

Condemning his statements, BJP leader Prabhat Jha told ANI, "The 21 crore people of UP have brought Mulayam Singh Yadav and his party to power. Whoever is in the government, it's their responsibility to protect the people of the state. Governments don't work on such statements. That's why I don't agree with what he says."

Human and Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani said that the law needs to be implemented more forcefully in Uttar Pradesh.

Another BJP leader Nalin Kohli also told ANI, "I don't know why Mulayam Yadav always comes up with these statements. Whether it's about boys will be boys or should rapists be hanged. As the ruling party of Uttar Pradesh, he and his party and especially his son as the Chief Minister must ensure proper law and order. They must punish the guilty."

"The ruling party of UP is politicising violence against women by repeatedly denying the existence of such crimes. The government will have to necessary actions against the culprits," women rights activist Annie Raja said.

"Women in Uttar Pradesh don't feel safe as no strict action is taken against the criminals who commit such crimes. There are many such cases which are still pending. The government saying that they are taking measures for better safety of women and claiming that the police have become more alert in such matters is ironical as the criminals are becoming more active," said Congress leader Rita Bahuguna Joshi.

Yadav's comments came after another brutal gangrape and murder of a woman in Lucknow's Mohanlalganj came to light.
