Santosh Kumar Gangwar, the BJP veteran, has won a record seven times from Bareilly constituency since 1989 except for the last election in 2009, when he was defeated by Congress’ Praveen Singh Aaron.

He was the minister of State for petroleum and natural gas in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government both in 1998 and then again in 1999 and 2003. For a brief period, he was a minister of state for heavy industries and public enterprises, with additional charge of Parliamentary Affairs. In between, he was also MoS for labour for a few months. 

Gangwar, who has held several posts within the BJP state unit in Uttar Pradesh, was the chief whip of the BJP in the 14th Lok Sabha in 2004.
