Sonia's term as Cong chief set to be extended
Business Standard The Congress Working Committee (CWC) is likely to extend party President Sonia Gandhi's term by another year when it meets in Delhi on Tuesday. Gandhi, at the helm for 18 years, will end her term in December. Rahul Gandhi, who was elevated as vice-president in January 2013, is not yet ready to take charge. Following Rahul's return from a sabbatical a few months ago, the party was abuzz with talk about his likely elevation to the top post. However, the Congress' central election authority had abruptly cancelled the election of the Congress president, scheduled sometime in September-October. A proposal for extending Sonia's term by a year could be moved at the CWC.
Of course, Rahul will continue to be the main mover - both in parliamentary tactics and in appointing office-bearers.
