Lok Sabha condemns attacks on people from Northeast

Lok Sabha adjourned for the day after uproar over Nido Tania death case and Telangana Bill

Leader of Opposition in the LoK Sabha Sushma Swaraj on Wednesday demanded justice for Arunachal Pradesh student Nido Tania who lost his life after allegedly being beaten up in Delhi last month.
 
"We must address the bias against the north-eastern community. We must demand protection for these students. It is our responsibility to protect every Indian child," she said. 
 
"Students from the north-east are forced to migrate because of underdevelopment in their states," she added.

Taking a dig at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, Swaraj said that the governments which are answerable are sitting on dharnas.
 
Swaraj said: "It's our responsibility that we should protect each and every children in India. I am amazed that both Delhi and the Central governments are sitting on protest at Jantar Mantar."

The BJP leader also appealed to the government to make student hostels for people from the north-east where they can stay with students from other parts of India. 
 
Congress member Ninong Ering, who represents Arunachal Pradesh East seat, brought an adjournment motion demanding a discussion on the issue of attacks on the people of Northeast, and appealed to the members to work together to provide security to the people of the region.     
 
"The way people from the Northeast were being treated and discriminated against, it is highly condemnable. Such racial discrimination is a very serious matter for the country," he said. 
 
He later withdrew his adjournment motion.     
 
Janata Dal (United) president Sharad Yadav asked all members to condemn the incidents of attack on the people of the Northeast and urged the government to ensure that no discrimination is meted out against the people of the region.    
 
Yadav said it was a matter of country's unity and integrity and demanded a detailed discussion on the issue in the House.    

"We all should unequivocally condemn the incidents," he said.     
 
In the Lok Sabha, Left MPs demanded action against the culprits. They carried posters saying 'Stop racial discrimination against North Eastern people'. 

CPI (M) member Basudeb Acharia said the recent incidents of attack on the people of Northeast were nothing but racial discrimination.     
 
"This has been going on for years together...Situation is very serious. It is a fact that discrimination is meted out to the people of the Northeast," he said.

"The entire House condemns the death of young boy (Nido Tania from Arunachal Pradesh). A clear message should go to the entire country that Parliament wants that all the people and children from the Northeast are protected," Speaker Meira Kumar said after members raised the issue.

Nido died after allegedly being beating up by shopkeepers following an altercation sparked by their barbs on his hairstyle.
 
Nido’s family and students and activists from the Northeast have been protesting in Delhi for the past few days, demanding a probe by a retired Supreme Court judge and an anti-racism law among other things. 
 
Shiromani Akali Dal members utilised the occasion to target Congress on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in the wake of renewed controversy on the issue following a television interview by Rahul Gandhi.     
 
Earlier, Telangana issue disrupted Parliament on the first day of the last session of current Lok Sabha, leading to adjournment of both Houses till noon.     
 
MPs from Seemandhra region, cutting across parties, stormed the Well of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha as soon as they assembled for the day.     
 
They carried placards saying 'Jai Samaikya Andhra Pradesh' (hail united Andhra Pradesh).
