The state of Telangana is celebrating the first anniversary of its foundation. The 29th state of India came into being on June 2 last year, after Andhra Pradesh was split into two states — Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
On Twitter, #TelanganaFormationDay was trending with pictures and posts wishing the state a “Happy Birthday”.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished Telangana joy on the occasion. Ramvilas Paswan, minister for consumer affairs, food and public distribution, and AICC General Secretary C P Joshi, among others, took to Twitter to congratulate the state.
In remembrance of the struggle for the formation of the state, the government has organised a week-long festival starting from Tuesday. The celebrations will cover all fields from culture and literature to music throughout the 10 districts of the state.
The festival began at midnight with fireworks in Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Chief Minister Chandrasekhara Rao started the celebrations with a tribute at the Martyrs Memorial at the Gun Park in the capital. Later, he unfolded the national flag at a colourful parade at the city's Parade Grounds.
Some tourist attractions in Hyderabad have also been light up.
