“Mantriyon ke tyagpatra nahin hotey. Yeh UPA government nahin hai…NDA government hai (Ministers don’t resign. This is not the UPA government..this is the NDA government),” Home Minister Rajnath Singh said on Wednesday when asked about the Congress' demand that External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje quit for their help to former Indian Premier League commissioner Lalit Modi, and also Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani resign for the discrepancies related to her educational qualifications in her affidavits to the Election Commission.
Communications and Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad also made a comment in the same vein: “Let me add, our ministers do not do all that their (UPA’s) ministers used to do.”
The word from the BJP is that it will brazen out the controversy, rather than risk asking such mass leaders as Raje to quit. Also, there is a feeling that if one of its ministers goes then it will lead to a domino effect, something the Narendra Modi government seems to have learnt from its predecessor.
So, what was it that the UPA's ministers did? For starters, they were made to quit if found indulging in corruption or even impropriety, at times in the absence of any adverse verdict by a court or an investigating agency.
