The tractor market in Uttar Pradesh has been growing consistently by 10-12 per cent over the last few years, primarily due to the large untapped potential in the state.

Since the percentage of farm mechanisation in the state is much lower than Punjab and Haryana, the penetration of tractors is on the lower side in Uttar Pradesh.

The current market size of tractor in UP is pegged at 80,000 units annually, Escorts Agri Machinery Head (knowledge management centre) Shenu Agarwal told Business Standard here.

Meanwhile, the utilisation of tractors for non-agricultural usage, especially the haulage operations has been growing rapidly, keeping pace with the growth in infrastructure and construction sectors.

“It is estimated that today 40-50 per cent of tractors are being used for haulage in India and this graph is only growing,” he claimed.

Since Indian tractors have traditionally been designed for usage in agriculture, Escorts has now launched its new range of anti-lift tractors (ALT) to cater to this growing segment.

It has unveiled ALT 4000 and ALT 3500 models with 41 horsepower (HP) and 37 HP, and priced at Rs 5.80 lakh and Rs 5.50 lakh, respectively.

ALT has been designed for their sturdy performance during haulage activities so that the driver’s safety is not compromised. Traditional tractors were more prone to mishaps because of their front-lift nature, resulting in reduced or no steering of the front wheels.

He said the new range of Escorts tractors would cater to crushers, miners, builders, contractors, operators of JCB, warehouses, depots, brick kilns and grain mandis among others.

The pan-India tractors space is estimated at 6,40,000 units annually and growing by 12 per cent.
