The congress with the theme ‘Play Triumph Scientifically’ provided the world’s leading sports academicians and practitioners an opportunity to present their work to an international audience as well as interacted with professionals who later examined sport through a variety of perspectives and disciplines.
The 14th Commonwealth International Sports Science Congress 2010(CISSC 2010) a lead up conference to the Common Wealth Games was organized jointly by the Organizing Committee CWG 2010 Delhi, National Association of Physical Education and Sports Science (NAPESS), Indian Association of Sports Medicine (IASM), Asian Federation of Sports Medicine (AFSM) and Delhi University at Manav Rachna International University’s campus, situated in the Aravali Hills Delhi, NCR.
The conference was inaugurated by Hon’ble Smt. Geeta Bhukkal, Education Minister, Haryana on 27th September.
The conference was attended by over 1000 national and international delegates, experts and scientists from different fields, who shared their experiences and the latest findings and practices for promoting sport sciences in India.
Dr. GL Khanna, Chairman CISSC 2010, said “The CISSC 2010 is momentous as the congress is in tandem with the 14th Commonwealth Games to be hosted by Delhi. The congress theme ‘Play and Triumph scientifically’ is apt as the sports competitions in the modern era are more scientific than conventional. Quality controlled sports science research definitely can foster the positive attitudes, sound character and healthy lifestyle among sports persons.”

With increasing number of global sport events coming to India, the need of a structured sports marketing and management program is often felt by the industry bigwigs.”, he further added.
Speaking over the conference, said, Dr. Farasat Hussain, President, Indian Association of Sports Medicine (IASM) said, "With the corporatisation entering Indian healthcare, the need has arisen to learn newer techniques of management and become cost effective in the process. There is also a growing need to give better medical care, training and proper nutrition to our athletes at minimum cost through best possible scientific means. This will not only benefit the development of athletes and sports in India but would also make India a preferred destination for foreign players seeking treatment and training."
The conference had discussions on the need of sports management, Sports Physiotherapy, Biomechanics of Physical Activity and Sports, Recent approaches in Nutrition, Health and Yoga, etc and provided exposure to sports and medical students need of creating a strong sports management structure.
Eminent speakers like Dr. Gurdeep Singh, Sr. VP, National Association of Physical Education and Sports Science (NAPESS); Dr. Parag Sancheti, Chairman, Sancheti Institute for Orthopaedic & Rehabilitation, Pune; Dr. Munish Chander, Secretary general CISSC 2010; Dr. M. Jegathesan, chairman of the medical commission of the Commonwealth Games Federation, etc. who discussed developments in sports sciences and research in India.
The conference was also attended by many renowned researchers and academicians including Dr. R. Kazlaukas, Director Australian Sports Drug Testing Laboratory who had a session on supplements containing banned substances, Dr. J.S. Sandhu, Dean Faculty of Sports Medicine Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, Dr. Vijay Shetty, Prof. David Kowan, Head of Deptt, Forensic Science and Drug Monitoring, Drug control centre Kings college, London & Dr. Alka Beotra, Science Director National Doping testing lab, Ministry of Youth Affairs and sports, New Delhi who spoke on Anti Doping Program in India and testing in Major games who highlighted its relevance in the current scenario.
In the last key note session by Dr. Robert Karch, from American University, USA called obesity as an epidemic and not a lifestyle disease anymore amongst the children. He also highlighted lack of physical activity at workplace as one of the reason of rising cases of obesity.
Dr. Tom Root, CEO of Hobs Sport USA, a major fitness firm talked about physical activity and fitness among children and how technology can be used to promote this.

Thanking all the delegates for making this congress a grand success, Dr. Amit Bhalla, Vice President Manav Rachna International University, laid emphasis on development of sports sciences in India, sports specific fitness regimes for developing and maintaining fitness of an athlete, etc. He called CISSC 2010 as a landmark in the development of sports sciences in India. He also highlighted MRIU’s association with Common Wealth Games 2010 as their students were trained by the CWG committee Dope Control officials for Dope Testing of the Athletes that would be participating in the CWG 2010 coming ahead and the recently concluded Hockey world cup in the capital.
The chief guest of the Valedictory function and closing ceremony on the 30th was Mr. K.C. Lakhani, Chairman, Lakhani Armaan Group. Appreciating the initiative by the university to host such a grand conference, with participation by Industry’s best researchers, academicians and experts and putting the city of Faridabad on the world map, he said, “I believe that it is the right forum for all to come together to share information and experiences that span various domains of sports sciences.
