CRI Pumps Private Ltd has taken up the first Pilot Agriculture Demand Side Management (Ag DSM) project launched at Mangalwedha subdivision of Solapur Circle in Maharashtra. In this pilot Ag DSM project CRI pumps would undertake the responsibility of identifying and replacing 3530 old inefficient agricultural pumps with Energy Efficient Five Star Rated Pump Sets, within a span of next 6 months.

The Central Government of India in association with Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) in an aim to save power upto 40% has decided to replace the inefficient low performing pumpsets in agricultural sector with pumpsets that are fully energy efficient as per BEE standards. The BEE Star Energy Efficiency Labels have been created to standardize the energy efficiency ratings of different electrical appliances and indicate energy consumption. The BEE Star Labels include a Star Rating System that ranges from One Star - least energy efficient, thus least money saved to Five Stars - most energy efficient, thus most money saved. Under this project the farmers will be provided with Energy Efficient Pump Sets (EEPS) free of cost. Agriculture Implementing Agency (AgIA) shall be responsible for dismantling the existing pump sets, procurement of new EEPS, installation, maintenance and repair/replacement. The Repair & Maintenance for 60 months shall be provided at no cost to the farmers.

Mr.Rajendran, Managing Director, CRI Pumps said “The power crisis in India should be addressed aggressively in the present scenario. Agricultural sector uses over 120 lakh electric pumps, all primarily used for irrigation, consuming 6000 crore kWh of electricity which accounts for 40% of the energy usage. If the 6lakh pump sets used per annum are replaced with fully energy efficient pump sets, it will result in a savings of Rs.2500 crores.” (Source: Mr.Kapil Sinha, IDEI Agri Er.).

CRI Pumps Private Ltd has taken the project for a term of five years. CRI Pumps has committed a cumulative energy saving of 36% over the next five years, which would be monitored by a Third party agency appointed by BEE with the approval of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd. The total estimated cost of the project is Rs.7 Crore. CRI Pumps won the project, since the other leading pump set manufacturers, could not take up the challenge and promise execution.
