Dr Ambedkar Govt Law College, Chennai, wins 10th Amity National Moot Court Competition

10th Amity National Moot Court Competition on ‘Public International Law’ organised by Amity Law School, Delhi concluded today with the felicitation of the winners by Hon’ble Justice Dipak Misra, Chief Justice of Delhi High Court, Vivek K. Tankha, Additional Solicitor General of India and U. U. Lalit, Senior Advocate. The competition was organised to familiarise students with the actual court proceedings and add perfection to their skills of formulating and presenting legal arguments before the judges.

Overwhelmed with the success of the Moot Court Dr. Ashok K Chauhan- Founder President, Amity Universe welcomed the distinguished guests, and proudly stated “The Indian legal acumen is unparallel and the purpose of such Moot Courts is to nurture them further.” He urged all the participants of the Moot Court Competition to aim at becoming distinguished legal professionals of the world and said “ the very fact that these participants have been chosen over their colleagues to represent their respective institutions at the Moot Court competition shows signs of their sky rocketing success in future.” “The aspiring Law students should constantly read the judgments of the eminent judges as this will help them imbibe judgmental power and develop analytical skills,” he added.

Delivering his valedictory address Hon’ble Justice Dipak Misra said “Law students are required to have immense curiosity and a logical brain to analyse law. A lawyer essentially needs to acquire knowledge and skill of speech.” Justice. Misra pointed out that a good lawyer should have sense of accepting logic, reliance on direct legal authorities, commitment to facts and presence of mind as the chief qualities. Mulling over the concept of leadership he advised that aspiring lawyers should carefully choose the type of leadership they wish to exemplify and said “an ideal leader is the one who doesn’t pronounce to be one and neither commands others to follow, yet is looked up to, based on his/her valuable contributions towards the well being of the society and human fraternity. Congratulating the participants of the Moot Court he announced “The Delhi High Court is open to taking interns from the Law colleges of the country wherein the bright budding lawyers can have the opportunity to see and learn from the practical proceedings of the court and gain experience with the best legal professionals and judges of the nation.”

Advising the budding lawyers, Vivek K. Tankha said, “ All budding lawyers must target to be different, as an endeavour of a promising legal professional does not stop at efficiently arguing and wining the legal cases rather it is about contributing to the justice delivery system in a way to enhance the dynamic concept of Law in order to benefit the larger section of Society.”

During his address U. U. Lalit urged the budding lawyers to focus on their and learning and introduced them to the A (Application), B (Basics), C (Clarity), D (Dedication), E (Excellence) and F (Foresight) of a successful legal career.

Prof. M. K. Balachandran- Director, Amity Law School, New Delhi shared the proud achievements of the students of Amity Law School and all the 77 participants of the 10th Amity Moot court competition. He informed “The 10th Amity Moot Court competition based on ‘Public International Law’ has been a sharp competition wherein all the 24 teams (each team comprising about 3 members) skillfully presented their legal arguments on the dummy case ‘Republic of Gunaristan (Applicant) Vs States of Dautsinsania, Mekratise and Dasint’ – with reference to the Special Agreement to be submitted to the International Court of Justice regarding ‘the difference between the states concerning the armed intervention of Gunaristan and environmental harm caused.” Apprising the audience about the proceedings of the Moot Court he said “The competitive performance of the teams on the Moot problem ‘Republic of Gunaristan (Applicant) Vs States of Dautsinsania, Mekratise and Dasint’ was judged and evaluated through the various stages of screening by eminent legal professionals of the country including Justice Manmohan, Judge, Delhi High Court, Justice Manmohan Singh, Judge, Delhi High Court, Justice Rajiv Shakdher, Judge, Delhi High Court and Justice M. L Mehta, Judge, Delhi High Court. The neck to neck final round between the two finalist teams was judged by Hon’ble Justice Deepak Verma, Judge, Supreme Court of India and Hon’ble Justice Balbir Singh Chauhan, Judge, Supreme Court of India.”

Winning Team of Dr. Ambedkar Govt. Law College, Chennai was given a Rolling Trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 7,500 and Runner-Up team of National Law University, Jodhpur was felicitated with a trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 5,000. The ‘Best Memorial Award’ trophy went to the team of NALSAR, Hyderabad with a cash prize of Rs. 2000. ‘Best Researcher Award’ and a cash prize of Rs. 2000 were lifted by Aparna Gaur from National Law University, Jodhpur Urvashi Mishra from the team of National Law University, Jodhpur bagged the Best Lady Advocate Award and Best Speaker Award and a cash prize of Rs. 4000 (2000 + 2000). Vinamrata Chawla and Anushree Narain from Amity Law School, Delhi jointly bagged the Best Student Award for the year of 2006 with cash prize of Rs. 2000. Best student Award for the year 2007, jointly went to Arnav Narain and Amit Upadhay from Amity Law School Delhi, with a cash prize of Rs. 2000. Ananya Kapoor from Amity Law School, Delhi won the Best Student Award for the year of 2009 along with a cash prize of Rs. 2000. All the recipients of the Best Students Award were also given books as prizes besides the cash prize.

The 10th Amity Moot Court competition that saw the spirited participation of over 24 teams from the most sought after law colleges across the country, included Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Patiala; G.H Raison Law School, Nagpur; New Law College, Bharati Vidyapeeth University; Government Law College, Mumbai; Aligarh Muslim University; Faculty of Law (Law Centre II); Department of Law, University of Calcutta; K.L.E Society’s Law College, Bangalore; LLOYD Law College, Greater Noida; National Law University, Bhopal; SVKM’s Pravin Gandhi College of Law; Faculty of Law, Jamia Milia Islamiya, New Delhi; Christ University, Bangalore; The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS); Amity Law School, Noida; and Amity Law School II, Noida.

All the 24 teams locked horns with one another to qualify for the Quarter finals and the 8 Quarter finalist teams of Gujrat National Law University, Gujrat; Campus Law Centre, Faculty of Law, University of Delhi; National Law university, Jodhpur; NALSAR, Hyderabad; ILS Law College Pune; National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS) ; Army Institute of Law, Mohali and Dr. Ambedkar Govt. Law College, Chennai competed further to make it to the semi finals. The 4 semi finalist teams of National Law University, Jodhpur; NALSAR, Hyderabad; Army Institute of Law, Mohali and_Dr. Ambedkar Govt. Law College, Chennai rubbed their shoulders against one another to make it to the finals on March 13th 2011. Battling the sharp competition of the semi final rounds the teams of Dr. Ambedkar Govt. Law College, Chennai and National Law University, Jodhpur made the worthy finalists.

Also present during the valedictory function of the 10th Amity Moot Court competition were Justice. V.K Sanghi, Judge, High Court; V.P Vaish, Registrar General, High Court of Delhi; Dr. Arun Mohan, Senior Advocate and eminent author, Lalit Bhasin, Honorary President, Amity Law School and many other Senior Directors and faculty members of Amity.
