India’s leading natural gas transmission company, GAIL (India) Limited has been adjudged the Oil and Gas Transportation Company for the year 2007-08 here today. The award was presented today by Shri R. S. Pandey, Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas to Dr. U. D. Choubey, Chairman and Managing Director, GAIL and Shri Santosh Kumar, Director (Projects), GAIL. The award given by Petrofed carries a trophy and a citation. GAIL has received the award for the second time in a row.
The award has been given to GAIL in recognition for leading performance growth of infrastructure, optimal utilization during hydrocarbon transportation in India while meeting norms of health, safety and environment protection.
This is the seventh major recognition received by GAIL nationally and internationally in the recent past. GAIL has been ranked 2nd among global gas utilities in Asia by Platts and has received wards for excellence in Human Resources and Cost Management as well as award for Safety Innovation. GAIL has recently received the Dun and Bradstreet – Rolta Corporate Award – 2008 and award for the most diversified PSU in the country.
Natural Gas continues to constitute the core business of GAIL. The Natural Gas transmission was 82.10 MMSCMD in FY 2007-08, which increased to 83.29 MMSCMD in FY 2008-09. Further, GAIL has set a target of transmitting 94.8 MMSCMD of natural gas from domestic sources and through LNG route during FY 2009-10 under the Annual Memorandum of Understanding signed with Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas for performance targets for the Financial Year 2009-10.
GAIL owns and operates over 7100 km. of natural gas transmission network with the transportation capacity of 148 MMSCMD in the country. The extensive natural gas infrastructure established over the last two decades has enabled sustained development of sizeable gas market in the country. GAIL has a track record of operating the pipelines efficiently and maintaining high safety standards. GAIL is laying 5 new pipelines and augmenting capacity of 3 existing pipelines at an estimated investment of Rs 20,000 crore, which would result in a pipeline network of 12,000 km by 2011-12 and a transmission capacity of 300 MMSCMD.
GAIL also owns and operates 1900 km of exclusive LPG pipeline network in the country. The LPG transmission through pipelines was 2.754 million MT and 2.74 million MT in the year 2007-08 and 2008-09 respectively.
