With a promise to boost the garment business in Kolkata, the organizers look forward to the further improvement in the city’s phenomenal contribution to the domestic market for kids wear and same in other sectors such as silk export, which is also growing steadily. The garments market in Kolkata is in the range of Rs 1000 crore, the lion’s share being the kids wear market, pegged at nearly Rs 500 crore, the highest in India. Out of four percent silk exports from India, Kolkata accounts for over one and halfpercent. ”The places like Metiabruz, Bhankara and Maheshtalla are the places, where majority of modernization is due and this sector is opening up to new technology, as they have realized the benefit in production as also in the quality. If, we are able to open up the market in these areas by even 10% then there will be requirement of 10,000 machines in next few months.” said Mr. B.P. Mishra CEO, Xhibition & Konferences India on being asked about his expansion plans.  He further added, “ the city has around 3500 family units in Metiabruz and another 2000 in Bankura manufacturing garments. The government is also extending full support to uplift these scattered business establishments. There is the need to upgrade the technology by these manufacturers and Garknit-X will provide them all these technology under one roof.”

Though according to Garknit-X, Kolkata has certain disadvantages like non- availability of raw materials, lack of modernisation and a meagre 4% of export rate, Mr. B.P.Mishra refers to Kolkata as one of the fastest growing regions for garments manufacturing in India , gateway to East and North East India and Bangladesh and one of the markets that is still active as cottage industry.

As you are aware the Garknit-X is happening since last six years, it has given huge boost to productivity in eastern region of India. The sophistication in production technology has changed the way manufacturing was taking place with age old domestic machine. In last six year the overall increase in sewing machine side is whopping and yet the modernization is not even covered 30% of over all sewing market. When we started the show way back in 2004, there were approximately 800 embroidery machines in Kolkata after the five editions the total number of embroidery of interest which the growth is taking place in last two years, signaling the shift in manufacturing base from others cities including Varanasi. Infact growth opportunity still remains very high, as we expect that the growth in garment side will be more than 10% and embroidery sector will grow at much more rapid pace of 25% for next three years.
