For successfully spreading the message of global recycling movement in India, Canvironment Week by Hindustan Tin has recently been awarded the Environment Initiative of the Year Award at Ambrosia Indspirit 2010, a noted award event for the Alcobev industry (wine and spirit industry and trade).
Selected by an eminent jury and certified by ERNST & YOUNG, the award comes as a definitive recognition to Canvironment Week, a global movement initiated by Hindustan Tin Works Limited – India’s leading CAN manufacturer. The award was received by Mr Atit Bhatia, Canviornment Week President and HTWL senior vice-president.
Said Mr Atit Bhatia, “This recognition is a huge inspiration to us as a corporation to work towards environment sustainability. I am sure Canvironment Week will continue to inspire many generations to act global and spread the word of environment-friendly metal cans, while also promoting the sustainability of the recycling system of the world.”
Canvironment Week is Hindustan Tin Work’s first Global Metal Can Recycling Movement to preserve the environment through decisive proactive global initiatives. The goal is to make a significant and sustainable impact by creating an all round awareness about the exclusive benefits of usage of Cans, the vital one being its eco-friendly nature.
The whole event (Canvironment week) revolves around a passion and perseverance to mobilize the cause, ‘Save our Planet’. By building a strong and united Global force, which will lay the foundation to create an Environment, which is Canvironment friendly, is how the founders of Canvironment proposes to achieve the goals. In the first year itself Canvironment Week was celebrated across 8 countries from 5 different continents.
To extensively promote this concept of recycling metal cans, can manufacturers and consumer goods brands such as Hindustan Coca-Cola, Tata Tin Plate, Micro Inks, Akzo Nobel, European Metal Packaging, World Packaging Organization, Metal Containers Manufacturers Association of India, Tinplate Promotion Council, International Packaging Association, and Indian Institute of Packaging had supported the Canvironment Week, besides The Ministry of Environment and Forests and the Ministry of Food Processing Industries – Govt of India.
More From This Section
As part of the Canvironment Week that started on 10th November, 2010, “can-banks” were set up across key locations in Delhi, where people could deposit metal cans. HTWL will sell the collected cans to scrap dealers for recycling and the proceeds will be used to help the rag-picker community – an important link in the recycling of metal cans through NGO Chintan in Delhi for development of the rag-picker community.
Cash awards and internship opportunities at HTWL were also given to winners from municipal schools and students of Indian Institute of Packaging who participated at the painting competition and Recycle Mania (installations made out of tins and cans), held at Delhi and Mumbai.
HTWL, along with NGO Chintan had earlier organized 3 free medical camps, which attended to around 1000 rag-pickers and distributed medical insurance policies to over 200 rag-pickers, during Canvironment Week in Delhi NCR.
About the Canvironment Week
A unique worldwide initiative, Canvironment week aims at not just educating but taking action as well. For the first time ever, Can makers and Brand owners across the world are coming together to create a ‘United Global Metal Can Recycling Movement.’
Our goal is to make a significant and sustainable impact by creating an all round awareness about the exclusive benefits of usage of Cans, the vital one being its eco-friendly nature.
The week starting 10th November 2010 to 17th November 2010 is marked as the Canvironment Week.
The movement holds special significance as this year marks the 200th birth year of Cans and pays tribute to the father of canning, Nicholas Appert. In India the movement will be marked by providing Medicare to 200 rag pickers within the country.
This week will be extended on various other platforms like schools and colleges to promote activities like drawing and painting contests, art installation using cans to encourage the usage of this no-waste/ no loss material. Can collection drives for all sections of society will also be conducted.
