The film set in Rajasthan is based on women empowerment and stars Divya Dutta and Archana Puran Singh in lead
National Film Development Corporation of India (NFDC) adds one more film to its kitty this year by producing another bilingual film. This time around NFDC brings a unique film in Hindi – Rajasthani language titled ‘Haat’ which means ‘Market’ in Rajasthani language. The film stars mainstream Bollywood actors like Divya Dutta, Archana Puran Singh, Mukesh Tiwari and Yashpal Sharma. The film is a social drama set in Rajasthan based on women empowerment. It is directed by Debutant director Seema Kapoor. The film was premiered today at the 11th Mumbai Film Festival at Fun Cinemas. The movie was screened under ‘New Faces’ section wherein films of debutant Indian directors are showcased.
Seema Kapoor has worked with many international and nationally known directors such as Swedish Director Guinter W., Russian Director Obrasove, Rajinder Nath, Dadi Padamji, Habib Tanveer, Astad Debu, and many more. She has written the screenplay and dialogues for the feature film “Abhay” produced by National Children’s Film Society Of India; the film won the National Award in 1994-95
The film ‘Haat’ is a story based on a custom called ‘Natha Pratha”, which states that for any reason if a woman wants to leave her husband, her father or any other person who supports her has to pay compensation to her husband. The amount of compensation is decided by the people who hold judicial post (‘Panchayat’). If the said amount cannot be paid for whatever reasons the said woman is punished by villagers for leaving her husband. And the punishment can be as degrading as stripping and parading her naked in front of the whole village. But on the contrary if husband wants to leave a woman, he need not give any reason or explanation for doing so. He can enjoy the free will for the same.
The story revolves around a woman named Sanja played by Divya Dutta who is tortured by her husband and the caste. Instead of being bogged down by the pressure of punishment, she throws away her inhibitions and stands up against this custom. She maintains her dignity and courage as a woman and gives new definition to womanhood.
Talking about her Directorial debut Ms. Seema Kapoor said, “Firstly I would like to thank NFDC for encouraging and supporting me by producing my film. ‘Haat’ being my first film, I was wary and expecting a lot of interference from NFDC but there was hardly any. NFDC showed complete faith in me and stood by me and guided me at every step. The financial arrangements were also excellent and never ever I had to think about the money during and after the shooting. They treated this project so well that I couldn’t believe how smoothly the shooting got complete. It was truly a memorable experience, working with the NFDC.”
The story, screenplay & dialogues for the film have been written by Ms Seema Kapoor. The music is by Ali Ghani and has Roop Kumar Rathod, Jaspinder Narula, Javed, Madhushree and Mahalakshmi Iyer as playback singers. Sunny Joseph is the cinematographer and Sanjeeb Datta is the editor of the film.
