Students from Pearl Academy of Fashion choreographed and presented "PANORAMA OF INDIAN SILK", launching specially designed garments as well as the designer sarees by the silk weavers from various parts of the country. The objective of the event was to create awareness about various possibilities with silk as an option. PANORAMA was organized by Pearl Academy of Fashion and Silk Mark Organization of India on 26th October, 2010 at Shree Ram Centre for Art And Culture from 6.00 pm. Students from Pearl Academy of Fashion have designed contemporary Indian women's wear and constructed them using Silk Mark labeled 100% silk fabrics. Smt. Monika S. Garg, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Textiles will be the Chief Guest at the occasion.
Silk Mark Organization of India is working under the aegis of Central Silk Board. Every year, as a means to promote the traditional weavers, Silk Mark along with organizing silk exposition in different parts of the country, also holds a fashion show of woven silk in form of sarees and dress material. This year Silk Mark Organization and Pearl Academy of Fashion joined hands to have designer silk garments, thus presenting to the world, various new facets of the versatile silk.
Prof. Nien Siao, HoD, Fashion Design Department, said, “This fashion show is a perfect example of how academics & trained professionals can help to promote specialized skills such as silk weaving. In this collaboration budding and bold designers of Pearl Academy of Fashion gave a contemporary fashion edge to silk used traditionally.”
“It gives us immense pleasure to be presenting before everyone ‘Panorama 2010’. The fashion show will not only encourage and promote our native silk weavers but also be a good learning experience for our students as they work on one of the oldest fibers in the world, i.e., Silk. This exercises exposes and sensitizes students to this genre of material and also gets them across the value of silk and its qualities,” said Dr. A K G Nair, Group Director, Pearl Academy of Fashion.
Under this project, Level 2 students of Fashion Design programme also had good interaction with weavers, suppliers and other intermediaries in the supply chain, and created awareness about various possibilities including varied options in designing silk garments. Silk garments designed under this project have been made at appropriate price points, keeping in mind the young women, conscious to get a fashion edge while staying within the comfort of contemporary looks. The project showcased silk in a perspective, which is much different and in tune with the fashion trends of today.
Exciting styles came out of silk fabric when fitted with suitable embellishments and design innovation. Apart from designing garments from pure silk, by sourcing silk sarees from the weavers, student experimented with various possibilities to introduce differentiated styling and draping, thereby giving expanded scope for buyers. Textile design students from the academy are helping in creating awareness on technical aspects among artisans as well as visitors to the expo.
