Indian Case Studies
Current MBA student Joe Maxwein, from Chennai, has already received a number of job offers from within the pharmaceutical industry, a sector he was keen to break into when he took up his place at Salford Business School.

“The MBA course has really changed the way I think about things, and not only in a business sense.  It has developed my thinking as well as my interpersonal skills.  I’ve also relished the opportunity to meet and learn from the tutors and my fellow students.

“I chose to do the MBA at Salford Business School mainly due to its location in Media City. I was also reassured by the AMBA accreditation as I wanted to make sure the course was good quality and respected in the industry.

“On completing my MBA I am hoping to secure a senior position in the pharmaceutical industry and use this to develop a prosperous career.”

MBA graduate Sathish Govindaraj moved to Salford from southern India in 2010, leaving his job as a senior consultant at a software company. The MBA has led his career in a different direction:

“I started out committed to progressing within the software industry but the MBA really opened my mind to business and made me realise how many other opportunities were out there,” he says.

After a successful project placement with global law firm DLA Piper Sathish realised that business consultancy was his future career path:

“The hands-on experience of working with DLA Piper whilst applying what the MBA was teaching me was a real turning point.  I could see how I could use these skills to forge out a career in business consultancy. The MBA forces you to look at business in a holistic way and this has been enlightening.  It’s key for business to look at the big picture, particular small businesses and with the MBA training I can offer this to my clients.”

Sathish is currently working in Manchester, consulting for legal and marketing firms, helping them to streamline their business systems.

Professor Amanda Broderick, Dean of Salford Business School, says the reason behind the scholarship offer is simple:

“The Salford MBA welcomes a diverse mix of students from many nationalities, backgrounds and cultures and this vibrant environment enhances learning as students share experiences. We want to draw our students from across the world, and our Global Leadership Scholarship competition is just one way of opening our doors and broadening our horizons.”

Professor Broderick visited India in March 2012 to hold a workshop at Queens College, Aurangabad, entitled ‘Delivering Industry and Employer Led Qualifications: The Opportunities and Challenges’. The workshop sought to understand the business and management needs of industry around Aurangabad and the greater region, as part of scoping out the possibility of developing business and management programmes at postgraduate level.

This initiative is being scoped jointly by Queen’s College and Salford Business School as part of a potential partnership to offer programmes in these discipline areas. The event was supported by Hon. Minister Khan, Principal, Queen’s Group of Colleges, and was widely attended by multinational businesses with interests in developing this approach in India.
