Project to fuel Tata Steel works growing energy requirement

Industrial Energy Limited (IEL), a joint venture between Tata Power (74%) and Tata Steel (26%), today announced the commissioning of 1x120 MW - Power House 6 at Jamshedpur. 1x120 MW - Power House 6 was inaugurated by the Honorable Governor of Jharkhand, Shri. Syed Sibtey Razi.

The Gas based 1X120 MW Power Project’s Power House # 6, built at a total cost of Rs. 490 Crore and commissioned in 34 months, will supply the entire generated capacity to Tata Steel Limited thereby meeting the increasing demand for power for the company’s Jamshedpur works.

The plant maintains high safety standards and followed the strict norms as laid by the Du Pont safety regulations. IEL is applying for registration under Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of Kyoto Protocol of UNFCCC.

Speaking on the occasion, Honorable Governor of Jharkhand, Shri. Syed Sibtey Razi said " We are happy that Tata Steel and Tata Power are doing good work for the progress of Jamshedpur, State of Jharkhand and the country."

The 1X120 MW Power Plant is a Green Power Plant and using Blast Furnace Gas, Coke Oven Gas & LD Converter Gas from Tata Steel Limited with Boilers (2 nos – Each of 230 TPH) have been supplied by Alstom and Turbine (special design – first of this kind in the country) whereas the generator supplied by BHEL.

Mr. Prasad R. Menon, Managing Director, Tata Power Company said, “We are delighted with the commissioning of Power House # 6 at Jamshedpur. The plant is another feather in Tata Power cap as it was not only completed in the stipulated time frame set out but also is a Green Power plant which reiterates our commitment of reducing our carbon footprints by generating and providing clean energy.”

IEL a joint venture between Tata Power and Tata Steel was set up to develop new Captive Power Projects (CPPs) to meet the power requirements of Tata Steel. As on date, IEL is also developing 120 MW Unit 5 at Jojobera which is progressing well.
