Tata Power, India’s largest private generating utility is also India’s leading wind power generator with an installed capacity of 200 MW as it added another first to its credit by commissioning 2 MW-class wind turbines designed by Kenersys Gmbh of Germany and and manufactured and installed by Kenersys India. Kenersys is a venture of Kalyani Group.
The Kenersys turbines were commissioned in September 2009 and have been operating successfully. After the first phase of 10 MW based on the 2 MW Kenersys turbine at the wind farm at Amberi and Visapur in Satara district in Maharashtra, a second phase of 88 MW is on the anvil.
Further, the Company is in the process of acquiring 20.95 MW operating wind assets in Maharashtra from Niskalp Energy Ltd. The Company will also shortly place an order for 150 MW wind capacity to be set up in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu and to be commissioned during the course of this year and next year.
Tata Power endeavors to substantially enhance its green energy generation through various renewable opportunities including a substantial presence in wind power.
Mr. Prasad Menon, Managing Director, Tata Power, said “The Company is progressing as planned on the path of renewable energy and today around 20% of the power generated is from ‘clean’ sources, which we will increase to 25% in 3-4 years. Today our wind portfolio is 200 MW and going forward we intend to add substantially to our renewables portfolio.
Currently, Tata Power’s wind power capacity is spread across three States namely Maharashtra (100MW), Gujarat (50 MW) and Karnataka (50 MW).

Adding further, Mr. Banmali Agrawala, Executive Director, Strategy and Business Development, Tata Power, said, “We want to ensure that at least 8,000 MW to 10,000 MW of our generation will be from low carbon, or zero emission technologies like hydro, solar, wind or from hot gases. Today 20% of our power comes from clean technologies. This may go down in the near term, but we aim to have at least one-fourth of our power through such sources.”
While the wind power generated in Gujarat and Karnataka is sold under a long term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the State DISCOM’s i.e. BESCOM in Karnataka and GUVNL in Gujarat, the wind power generated in Maharashtra is sold to Tata Power’s Distribution business unit in Mumbai.
Maharashtra, where the some of Tata Power’s wind farms are located, is one of the leading states in promoting wind power generation. The Company’s wind farms are spread across the state viz. Visapur and Sadawaghapur located in Satara District, Khandke and Supa in Ahmednagar District, and Bramanvel in Dhulia district.
