With Hindustan Coca Cola Beverages Pvt Ltd, Tata Tin Plate (TCIL) and a host of corporates joining in the global campaign called ”Canvironment Week” has gained momentum.
Canvironment Week, launched yesterday at the initiative of Hindustan Tin Works Ltd, aims at educating people on using and recycling cans to save energy and environment. Can is being used as packaging material for a host of products of daily use – from milk, soft drinks, beer, shoe polish and so on.
“It is just about educating ourselves and can users at large, but taking a definite action as well,” says Mr Sanjay Bhatia, Managing Director of Hindustan Tin Works Limited, who is also the Chairman of the Canvrioment Week movement.
“Be it the Metal Cans we manufacture or the social responsibility measures we take; sustainable solutions are what we look for. Building on this philosophy, the launch of Canvironment Week has been initiated, aiming to spread awareness about sustainable metal packaging solutions. I take this opportunity to welcome Hindustan Coca Cola Beverages, Tata Tin Plate, Micro Inks and Akzo Nobel and look forward to their continuing support,” Mr Bhatia said.
In today’s world of fast food and tight schedules, it is unimaginable to live without the usage of packaging material. Right from the toothpaste you use to the soda cans, almost every product comes ‘packed’ to you. It is a part and parcel of our modern life styles.
Due to its unique quality of 100% recyclability, metal cans are the most sustainable package of the future. Through our initiative, we wish to create a healthy Respect for the environment by promoting the philosophy of Reduce, Recycle and Reuse and spread awareness about the benefits of metal cans.

The organizations joining the Canvironment movement see this drive as a unique initiative. According to them, HTWL’s move has showcased its abilities before the world & has recognized some of the biggest challenges of preservation of natural resources before all of us. They have contributed their bit through the WORLDS FIRST METAL CAN RECYCLING MOVEMENT. This move also marks a tribute to Mr. Nicholas Appert – the Father of CANNING on the 200th Birthday of the CAN (the can was invented in 1810).
Already 10 Can banks have been installed with the help of NGO – Chintan at 10 different locations in Delhi. The population at large would be asked to deposit cans at can banks & the used cans will be sent into recycling. All the revenue thereby generated will be given upfront for the upliftment of the lives of the rag pickers through Chintan.
“The global Canvironment Week is the first of its kind. It demonstrates that each of our partners which includes can makers, brand owners, raw material suppliers, educational institutions, trade associations and others from different parts of the world with varied cultures are environmentally aware, socially responsible and work together towards the same cause of ‘Save our Planet’. With Hindustan Coca-Cola, Tata Tin Plate, Micro Inks and Akzo joining the movement Canvironment Week has received a great impetus” said Mr. Atit Bhatia, President Canvironment Week and Sr Vice President Hindustan Tin Works Ltd who is also spearheading Canvironment Week.

About the Canvironment Week
A unique worldwide initiative, CanvironmentWeek aims at not just educating but taking action as well. For the first time ever, Can Makers and Brand owners across the world are coming together to create a ‘United Global Metal Can Recycling Movement.’
Our goal is to make a significant and sustainable impact by creating an all round awareness about the exclusive benefits of usage of Cans, the vital one being its eco-friendly nature.
The week starting 10th November 2010 to 17th November 2010 is marked as the Canvironment Week.
The movement holds special significance as this year marks the 200th birth year of Cans and pays tribute to the father of canning, Nicholas Appert. In India the movement will be marked by providing Medicare to 200 rag pickers within the country.
This week will be extended on various other platforms like schools and colleges to promote activities like drawing and painting contests, art installation using cans to encourage the usage of this no-waste/ no loss material. Can collection drives for all sections of society will also be conducted.
