The annual Terry Fox Run in Delhi will be held on September 14, 2008 at the Karnail Singh Stadium, Connaught Place. The 5-km run will be flagged off by Mrs Sheila Dikshit, the Honorable Chief Minister of Delhi and H.E. Joseph Caron, Canada’s High Commissioner-designate to India, at 8:30 am. The run is in memory of Terry Fox, a brave Canadian, who championed the cause of public involvement in the search for a cure for cancer.

The run, being organized by The Indo Canadian Cancer Research Foundation, is open to all who would run, jog, walk, rollerblade, bike or choose any other means of non-motorized transport. Participation is free. However, voluntary pledges are welcome towards cancer research in India. Participants need to register at the beginning of the run to receive a commemorative shirt and a certificate.

The Terry Fox Run is the largest single-day fund-raiser for cancer research in the world. All funds support innovative cancer research and are distributed after a strict scientific review process. For the past several years the Rotary Cancer Hospital at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has been the recipient of funds generated in Delhi.

On Sunday, the participants in this run will be commemorating Terry Fox who ran the Marathon of Hope after his cancerous leg was amputated in 1980. Terry was so deeply moved by the pain and despair of other cancer patients he decided to run across Canada, a distance of more than 18,000 kilometers, and raise funds for cancer research. He invited every Canadian to be a part of his "Marathon of Hope." Terry's fierce determination resulted in his running an average of 42 kilometers every day for 143 days. Terry was forced to end his marathon due to the spread of cancer to his lungs. Ten months later, Terry died at the age of 22, in June 1981.

You can help realize Terry's dream of finding a cure for cancer by cheering on the New Delhi participants, or making a donation to this worthy cause.
