"We shall no longer hold talks with any militant groups anywhere in the country and this is in the pipeline," Joint Secretary (North East), Ministry of Home Affairs, Shambhu Singh, told reporters here.
He said "the reason is that every time you talk to a group, a small remnant of the group tends to break away and again continues with illegal and prejudicial activities.
"These break-away groups think that it will be given the same moral high grounds and be given the chance to sit across the table with its list of demands which often are non-existent," Singh said.
Assam has a list of militant groups which held peace talks, but later a small group of the same outfit broke away as an 'anti-talk' faction as was the case with the DHD, UPDS KLNF and the NDFB outfits, he said.
The Home Ministry official also said the government was not interested in talking to the Garo National Liberation Army, a militant group active in Meghalaya's Garo hills region as it was an organisation of 'rogues'.
"We will continue dealing with them the way we are dealing now," Singh said.
