"Our governments, Centre and state, spend tens of thousands of crores of rupees every year on social development schemes. In order to understand the efficiencies and effectiveness of these spendings, we need strong and independent institutions to undertake studies and research.

"For example, 'concurrent' evaluation of these social schemes and programmes could be of great value rather than the present trend of post-mortem audits," he said.

Ramadorai, Chairperson, Governing Board of Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), was speaking at the inauguration of the institute's academic programmes at its campus here.

TISS, a Government of India-funded deemed university with a NAAC accredited 'A' grade, inaugurated three courses today. TISS is being run in an interim campus and is in the process of setting up its own campus on 100 acres of land provided by the state government near here. The campus is expected to be ready by early 2014.

The upcoming TISS Hyderabad campus will house several inter-disciplinary schools and centres and will also offer disciplinary and inter-disciplinary academic programmes, he said.

The TISS Hyderabad campus will also house an incubation centre for design and enterprise to strengthen innovations in the social sector and also a school for vocational education.

By 2017, the TISS campus in Hyderabad is expected to have a student capacity of 1250 and a faculty and staff strength of 140, he added. (More)
