small screen Jishu Dasgupta died at a hospital today after a protracted illness, according to his family.

He was 53.

Known to his admirers and friends by his first name, Jishu, he made several TV serials for Doordarshan and some private TV channels, some of which became quite popular.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee mourned Dasgupta's demise and said that the Bengali film and tele-serial industry suffered a major loss in his death.
