Manipur govt urged to stop conversions

President of the Indigenous People's Forum G Poushing told mediapersons here that some agents of western countries were trying to spread 'non-ethnic religions' in the state.

Without identifying the agents or their countries, he said that they taking advantage of the poor financial position of families in rural and hill areas, particulaly tribals.

Poushing said they were promised both money and material benefits if they converted and urged the government to look into the matter.

He said the majority of the Meiteis in the valley embraced Hinduism some three hundred years ago and emhasised the need for protecting people from conversion.
