"The matter will be examined properly as having a joint cadre has its own merits and demerits," Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said in the assembly.

"I do not see any reason why Meghalaya should continue to share the IAS cadre with Assam," UDP MLA Paul Lyngdoh said.

He claimed said that the joint-cadre system many times forced bureaucrats to be subservient to their parent state viz-a-viz the long pending border dispute with neighbouring Assam.

The former student leader said a separate cadre would ensure that officers feel that they were better placed when it came to serving their own state.
