village declared as an illegal settlement in Mizoram's Champai district on the border with Myanmar were destroyed by a mob from nearby Vaphai village on Thursday night, police sources said today.
The mob surprised the few police deployed there to prevent violence and pulled down 11 houses including two school buildings, the sources said.
Two platoons of armed police were sent to the village to prevent further disturbances, the sources said.
The Aizawl bench of the Gauhati High Court, headed by Justice P K Saikia, during hearings on December 12 and 13 had asked the state government to clarify why the Saikhumphai Bawk village was to be dismantled and shifted to Vaphai.
Earlier, a Gauhati High Court judge, T Vaiphei had stayed shifting of the hamlet to Vaphai until the matter was settled by the court.
