"The Congress is going alone in the next election irrespective of whether Mr P A Sangma is inside or outside the NCP," Sangma told reporters here.

He said, "We have been doing it in the past. Even now when P A Sangma is outside the NCP, the Congress is going alone."

Confident that the Congress would receive a mandate to govern, Sangma said, "Time has come for the state to have a government that is led by a single major political party."

NCP NE Central Observer Robert Kharshiing recently said that his party, which has only two MLAs in the 60-member House, wanted a prepoll alliance with the Congress and its alliance partners in the state.

Except for the first government led by Capt Williamson A Sangma in the 70s, Meghalaya has never had a single party government.

The Congress has 28 MLAs and supported by five Independent MLAs, four of whom are its associate members.

"I have full confidence that people will give a mandate to the party which is working in conformity with their expectations setting new benchmarks in the development perspective," Sangma said.
