Polling underway in Bihar for urban local bodies

Polling at four centres were cancelled after a number of people were injured when rival groups clashed near a polling centre at ward two of the Bhagalpur Municipal Corporation over change of number of polling centres without prior notice, the sources said.

The Superintendent of Police K.S. Anupam rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control, they said.

There were also reports of poll-related violence in Patna and Gaya districts, the sources said.

The Muzaffarpur police recovered five crude bombs from the Abida high school premises under Mithanpura police station area in Muzaffarpur district, Superintendent of Police Rajesh Kumar said.

He said the boms may have been kept in the school to create disturbance during the urban local bodies polls. The bombs were defused.

In Jamui, a presiding officer Naresh Kumar, posted at a polling centre under Jhajha Nagar Panchayat was detained after he allegedly misbehaved with voters, the sources said.

He was replaced and polling was going on peacefully.

In Nalanda district, a constable Avdesh Kumar on duty at a polling centre in Imadpur in Biharsharif Municipal Corporation area died due to heart attack, they said.

There are 11,173 candidates in the fray for 2494 wards spread over seven municipal corporations, 32 zila parishads and 67 nagar panchayats in the state.
