"The state would not only be independent in energy generation but also have 5,000 MW electricity in surplus by 2013 as 90 per cent works of power related projects have been completed and the remaining would be finished by next year," Singh said at a function here.
He further said that the deserts in Jaisalmer had the capability to fulfil energy needs of the entire country.
Apart from conventional sources of energy generation, he said the state had the advantage of tapping solar energy as an important and renewable source considering the vastness of Rajasthan's deserts.
"Geographical conditions of the state are difficult with less water and 60 per cent of desert yet it enjoys the privilege of being capable of generating good amount of solar energy that can fulfil power-related requirements of the country.
"Jaisalmer alone can produce good amount of solar energy and we need to tap this opportunity," he said.
Singh was the chief guest at a function organised by National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) to celebrate 30 years of its establishment.
