The modern retelling of the classic fairytale, which also stars Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth, overtook "Men in Black 3", which was at the top last week, The Hollywood Reporter said.
Earning a better-than-expected domestic gross, the Rupert Sanders-directed movie helped Universal Pictures claim a victory after its last movie "Battleship" stumbled on the chart.
"It's a big relief. From the get-go, the filmmakers, the cast and the studio conveyed how very unique this movie was and that its appeal would go beyond the usual Snow White audience," said Nikki Rocco, the president of distribution at the studio.
It wasn't the only new Hollywood film making headlines. Opening in 15 markets overseas a week ahead of its June 8 domestic debut, Ridley Scott's 3D sci-fi spectacle "Prometheus" grossed a stellar USD 35 million for 20th Century Fox.
The third installment of "Men in Black" film franchise, pulled in an estimated USD 29.3 million. "The Avengers" also fell one spot from Number 2 to Number 3, adding approximately USD 20.3 million to its total domestic gross.
At the fourth place is "Battleship", which raked in an estimated USD 4.8 million on its third weekend.
Sacha Baron Cohen's "The Dictator" is still behind the action, sci-fi film with approximately USD 4.7 million.
