"It is unfortunate that this time the two parties are fighting against each other. It is not clear who will gain from the division of votes," Congress MLA and Union Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee's son Abhijit said while campaigning for party candidates for Nalhati municipality election.

On whether the allies would join hands to form the civic board in Nalhati if none of them got majority, he said, "This will depend on the situation after the results are declared."

When asked to comment on personal attack on him by some Trinamool leaders during the election campaign, the Congress MLA from Nalhati in Birbhum district said, "Everybody saw their behaviour. They behaved according to their taste and education. I am not bothered."

The Congress and Trinamool Congress are contesting against each other in all the 15 wards of the municipality.

In the last civic body election, the Congress had bagged 11 of the 15 seats in Nalhati municipality. However, after the Lok Sabha election, nine Congress councillors including Chairman Biplob Ojha joined Trinamool and the power of the civic body was transferred to it.
