"As procession of Palli (deity) of Vardayani Mata begun four hours late than its scheduled time, a large number of people rushed towards the temple and in ensuing commotion this unfortunate incident happened," said Superintendent of Police, Gandhinagar, Sharad Singhal.
"Alka Harshad Bhatt (54) died on the spot. Four others sustained minor injuries and one person had his hand fractured in this," he said.
Every year on the ninth night of the Navratri festival scores of people come to Rupal village to pay their respect to 'vardayini mata'.
"The procession usually starts at midnight but today it began at around 4 AM and this time approximately 12-15 lakh people were present in the village," Singhal said.
