"Suspected militants hurled a grenade on Monish wine shop which exploded... Injuring six persons of which one succumbed to injuries while being taken to hospital this evening," DIG, Jammu-Poonch range, J P Singh said.

Preliminary information said the grenade was thrown at the wine shop at Narwal, south of Jammu city, at 1910 hours, police said.

Kuldeep Raj, a resident of Akhnoor, succumbed to injuries while five others -- Amarnath, Rajinder Singh, Rakesh Singh, Ramu and Pradeep Kumar -- were being treated at GMC hospital.

This is the second attack on a wine shop in the state and Pakistan-based Hizbul Mujahideen are suspected to be behind it. One person was killed and four others injured when militants had attacked a wine shop in Dalgate area of Srinagar earlier this week.

Asked whether it was linked to the Dalgate attack, Singh said "it is premature to say anything. We are probing."

Senior police officials visited the site and security has been beefed up in the area. Intensive vehicle checking has been launched, they said.

This is the first time militants have struck in Jammu area since May 2011 when one person was killed and 10 others were injured, while a senior Army officer had escaped unhurt in a car-bomb blast on Jammu-Srinagar national highway.
