In a major haul of explosives, police today recovered 11 country bombs, claimed to have been dumped by organised crime gangs, from a garbage bin in a busy area of the city.
The bombs were of 'grenade type' which would explode only when hurled hard against an object and had been dumped by organised crime members, Deputy Commissioner of Police Samant Rohan Rajendra told reporters here.
The recovery of bombs from the bin in Annar Nagar caused tension in the locality, where a low-intensity cycle bomb exploded on May 1, 2012, nine days ahead of the visit of top BJP leaders including L K Advani to the city for a party meet.
In 2011, a powerful pipe bomb was found and defused from under a bridge near Tirumangalam in the district, hours before Advani was to take the route on his jan chetna yatra.
The DC said the bombs would be defused after experts analysed them fully.
Top police and Intelligence officials visited the spot.

Initially police had said of the 11 objects recovered from the bin, two were identified as bombs and nine others were being analysed.
According to Police, Organised Crime Intelligence Unit got a tip off that eleven bombs had been left in the garbage bin. Even as the Police were rushing to the spot, a sanitary worker was picking the bombs as they looked mysterious.
Police recovered the bombs from her and sent it for analysis by experts which revealed that these were grenade type country bombs, they said.
The pressure mounted by Police against the criminals ahead of Babri Masjid demolition anniversary on December 6 and tight vigil on the gangsters would have forced the criminals to drop the bomb in the garbage bin, a police official said.
Police said the bombs could have exploded if the loading crane of the bin hit them accidentally. It was also possible to use some ingenious methods to explode the bombs.
