Six persons drowned in Mirzapur district when a boat carrying 20-25 people capsized in Ganga river in Chilha area, police said.
The incident took place this morning when the boat was crossing river from Balliparwa to Bhanauti village.
Those killed in the incident have been identified as Shyamkali (50), Shanti Dubey (60), Upasana (7), Munni Tiwari (45), Sunju (16) and Sundari (14).
Police said while eight persons were rescued, efforts were being made to trace missing ones.
In a similar incident, five persons drowned in Ganga river in Naraura and Rajghat areas of Bulandshahr district during Ganga Dussera.
The victims include three members of a family from Aligarh district.
Sub-divisional magistrate Jai Shanker Mishra said while four bodies have been fished out, efforts were being made to trace missing one.
