11 killed in lightning in West Bengal

Nine persons were struck down by lightning during rains in North Dinajpur district while two others died in Malda district, police said.

Seven men, one woman and a child were working in a field at Chilandighi, about 30 km from Raiganj, at around 11 a.M. when they were struck by lightning, they said.

In neighbouring Malda district, two persons, struck by lightning, died in Chanchol sub-division and Gajol block at around 12 noon, police said.

Jyotish Burman (42) and Dulali Mondal (35) were struck by lightning when they went to the field to retrieve their cattle under an overcast sky, police said.

Manikchak, Gajol and Bamongola blocks in Malda district were lashed by strong winds and rain causing damage to about 500 makeshift houses, according to preliminary reports.

A boat ferrying five people capsized in the strong wind in a tributary of the Ganga at Gadai char (island) bordering Jharkhand. Two passengers swam to safety while three others were missing, police said.
