Eleven Tamil Nadu athletes who had gone to Turkey as part of a larger Indian contingent of 148 students to participate in the world school games meet at Trabzon, returned to the state today.
While nine athletes reached Chennai, two others arrived at Coimbatore from Delhi and all of them were warmly welcomed by their parents and officials.
Following a failed coup attempt which saw scores of killings in Turkey, there was anxiety about the safety of the children. They had gone there from Delhi on July 11 and returned to India today as per the itinerary.
While one school girl Tamizhselvi from Chennai posted a Whatsapp message informing her parents that everyone was safe, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Union Sports Minister Vijay Goel had also said that all students were safe.
The Tamil Nadu government too had contacted Indian embassy officials in Turkey and assured that the school children were safe.
