14 Chinese arrested in Nepal for smuggling foreign currencies

Nepal police has arrested 14 Chinese nationals, including 11 women, for smuggling foreign currencies worth Nepali Rupees 650 million.
The 14 Chinese nationals were detained from Koteshwor, Kathmandu, as they were preparing to smuggle the foreign currencies from Nepal's northern border to Khasa of Tibet, China.
A special squad of Nepal Police nabbed the Chinese nationals as they were trying to smuggle foreign bank notes including USD 397,128 and Euro 116,840 by concealing them under plastic utensils, cosmetic goods, boxes, thermos, and loaf, police said.
Foreign currencies of ten different countries including Japanese Yen, Chinese Yen, Australian dollar and Pound Sterling have been seized by the police.
The police have also arrested three Nepalese drivers who were involved in transporting these foreign currencies in their vehicles.
The total amount of foreign currency equals to Nepalese Rs 650 million, police said, adding, they were arrested during a security check at Koteshwor on the basis of a tip off.
They were trying to smuggle the foreign currencies from Kathmandu towards Khasa in Tibet via Tatopani border, police said.
After a preliminary investigation it was found that the foreign currencies were collected by the Chinese nationals in exchange of bringing gold from Lhasa to Kathmandu.
