As many as 15,000 saplings sourced from 20 countries were today planted at the Commonwealth Games Park here as part of the New Delhi Municipal Council's massive plantation and cleanliness drive launched recently.
The plants included Manikaria Hexandra (Bangladesh), Erythrina Crista (Argentina), Butea Monosperma (Sri Lanka), Bauhinia Alba (Pakistan), Nyctanthes Arbor-Tristis (Thailand) and Citrus Sinesis (the US).
"The 2.5-acre Commonwealth Games Park was established in 2010 with the aim to plant trees from different countries. It already has plants sourced from 15 countries," NDMC Chairman Naresh Kumar said.
"The drive will expand the entire areas green cover and will improve overall environment of NDMC area besides giving impetus to cleanliness," he added.
NDMC had launched a major plantation and cleanliness drive to expand the green cover in areas under its jurisdiction on July 25. In the first phase 20,000 saplings were planted.
The civic body plans to plant 50,000 saplings by end of rainy season.
"To make the programme a success, the entire NDMC area was divided into 14 zones and sufficient manpower were deployed under a senior officer," an official statement said.
